Chowan University Rotaract Club Fills Empty Bowls With Just a Little More Than Soup

Soup tasting, friendly conversation, and comradery in purpose brought the Chowan community (students, faculty, and Murfreesboro citizens) together for an Empty Bowls Supper Monday evening. The Rotaract Club at Chowan University sponsored this event where attendees bought a hand-crafted bowl made by Chowan’s Clay Club under the direction of Assistant Professor of Art, Rob Buller and chose from a selection of homemade soups donated by Murfreesboro’s Rotary Club and Chowan Faculty to fill their bowls. The close to $2,000 made from this event will be donated to local food banks.

Sponsored by the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, all members of the Chowan University Rotaract Club are devoted to community service. As part of Rotary International, an organization of business and professional leaders, and in Murfreesboro, Chowan faculty, united worldwide, they provide humanitarian service, encourage ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

Marissa Mann, graduating Biology major and President of Rotaract says, “Rotaract’s mission is about service above self and I love to see so many people come together to make that happen. The bowls produced by the Chowan Clay Club turned out beautifully. It was so nice to see a community of people enjoying themselves with their soups and chili.”

Rotaract’s faculty advisor and current President of Murfreesboro Rotary Club, Catherine Vickers, beams with pride as she says, “Rotaract members are inspiring. They are involved in all that is good. How fortunate can I be, to be part of such greatness?”
