Pioneer Caterers Recognize Kennedy and Gains at Chowan University
Chowan University partners with Pioneer College Caterers for all its on-campus food service and catering needs. Pioneer employees Jon Kennedy and Derrick Gains were recognized by the company and celebrated by Chowan in receiving two awards in which they were competing among many talented Pioneer management teams across the country.
Jon Kennedy, Food Service Director at Chowan University was honored with the Pioneer Community Service Award. This award is presented to the management team member who has demonstrated an exceptional ability to serve at work effectively while making a significant contribution in time and service to their local community as well.
Derrick Gains, Executive Chef, was awarded the Culinarian of the Year Award. This award is presented to the executive chef, kitchen manager or production manager who has demonstrated exceptional performance in all areas and to encourage the highest of standards in: Adherence to Pioneer program and presentation standards; Sanitation and safety as evidenced by health inspection scores and workers compensation claims; Food quality and presentation; Creativity and marketing of menu offerings in board operation, catering, retail operations, Bonus Bites and monthly specials; Providing director with continuous feedback regarding board and retail operations menus; and Employee training and development.
Pioneer Catering District Manager, Sami El-Maasarani hosted a small celebration to honor Kennedy and Gaines on Wednesday, June 10. Before presenting each recipient with a plaque he stated, “The pandemic made last year a nightmare for food service with the ever-changing challenges, but Jon and Derrick both kept their smiles and maintained a positive attitude.” El-Maasarani continued to express his gratitude for the way these men supported the Chowan University Community and their embrace of “small-town life” in Murfreesboro. In attendance and offering their congratulations at the intimate gathering were Chowan University President Kirk Peterson, his wife Rachel Peterson, and Vice President for Business Affairs Danny Davis.
