Chowan Handles Vikings In CIAA Double Dip
The Chowan Softball team swept CIAA Northern Division rival, Elizabeth City State, at home on Saturday afternoon.

Haley Cooper led the charge at the plate picking up three hits and four RBI on a triple and a double. Kerrin Mailhot went 2-3 with a RBI.
Beth Walker picked up two hits including a double to go with two RBI. Hannah Naifeh went 2-2 with a RBI in the opener.
EmaRae Flores picked up the win in the circle tossing a complete game allowing three runs (two earned) off eight hits and struck out three. Shannon Buchanan picked up the win in the early contest allowing three hits in 3.1 innings. Carleigh Wildeboer combined for the shutout tossing the final 1.2 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 8, Elizabeth City State 0 (five innings)
Haley Cooper picked up a single and a stolen base in the first inning but would be left stranded at third.
Chowan posted the first run of the game in the second inning as Miranda Glover drew a walk and swiped second and third. Hannah Naifeh singled to left center to plate Glover. Naifeh would swipe second before the final out.
Elizabeth City State loaded the bases in the third on two hits and a free pass but Shannon Buchanan would get out of the inning with a ground out.
The Hawks added two runs in the third inning on a hit and an error to lead 3-0. Beth Walker produced a one out single up the middle. Jesse Gentry reached on an error before moving up 60 feet on a wild pitch. Lindsey Stigler drew a walk while Walker scored on the wild pitch. Brittany Parson hit a sac fly to right allowing Gentry to score.
Chowan would open up the contest in the fourth inning plating five runs on four hits to lead 8-0. Carleigh Wildeboer singled to start off the inning. Hannah Naifeh singled before Donya Salman reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Haley Cooper cleared the bases with a double to left center. Beth Walker would reach on a hit by pitch. Two wild pitches in the inning allowed Cooper to score and Walker to move to third. Jesse Gentry reached on a walk before Brooklynne Johnson hit a sac fly to plate Walker.
Game Two: Chowan 8, Elizabeth City State 3
Elizabeth City State looked to get on the board for the first time on the afternoon in the first inning as a single and an error provided a spark. A double play ended the threat.
Chowan capitalized on the free passes and errant pitches to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Haley Cooper and Beth Walker reached via the free pass. Meredith Morgan drew a walk to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Cooper to score for the early advantage.
ECSU rallied in the second to even the score as an error and a single allowed a run to score.
The Hawks quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning as Kelsey Sonntag picked up a one-out single. Haley Cooper brought Sonntag around to score on a RBI triple down the right field line.
Chowan continued to attack in the third inning as Jesse Gentry and Lindsey Stigler singled to start the rally. Gentry and Stigler executed the double steal before Gentry scored on Meredith Morgan's ground out. Stigler would score on a single by EmaRae Flores. Hannah Naifeh continued the inning with a walk. Kerrin Mailhot singled up the middle to score Flores before taking second on the throw. Haley Cooper reached on an error allowing Naifeh to score. Cooper took second prior to the double by Beth Walker plating Mailhot and Cooper.
Meredith Morgan picked up a single in the fourth along with a hit by pitch by Lindsee Howard. Kerrin Mailhot picked up a bunt single and a stolen base in the fifth.
The Vikings added a run in the sixth and seventh inning to close the gap to 8-3.
Leah Spiggle singled and swiped second in the sixth inning. Meredith Morgan drew a walk to round out the base runners in the contest for the Hawks.
