Chowan University introduces five new Faculty Members
In conjunction with the 2018-2019 academic year, Chowan University has added five new faculty members to the team: Dr. Shirley Alt, Cindy M. Britton, Theresa diLustro, Dr. Amin Rudaina Khalil, and Dr. Sarah Reed.
Dr. Shirley Alt joins the Department of Psychology at Chowan as Associate Professor of Psychology. Dr. Alt earned the Ph.D. and Master of Arts in educational psychology, learning and cognition from the University of Minnesota. She also graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. Dr. Alt is responsible for teaching several psychology courses. She is a recipient of the John P. Yackel/AGS Graduate Internship and has authored several publications in her field that focus on both teaching and learning.
Cindy M. Britton joins the Criminal Justice Department as an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Psychology. Britton is expected to earn her Ph.D. in psychology from Keiser University this year. Her Master of Science in criminal justice is from Keiser University, and she earned her Bachelor of Science in criminal justice/criminology from the University of Mount Olive. Britton has more than 20 years of experience in mental health and the juvenile justice system. She has spent over 30 years working with individuals with special needs and high-risk youth. She also has more than 25 years of experience working with individuals dealing with substance abuse. Britton was a recipient of the Governor’s Award in 1989. She teaches an array of different courses in the criminal justice and psychology fields.
Theresa diLustro joins the faculty as the Director of the Writing Center. DiLustro earned her Master of Arts in English from Old Dominion University and her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Mary Washington. She teaches several entry-level English courses. Dilustro has 20 years of experience teaching English and currently holds teaching licenses in both North Carolina and Virginia. She spent eight years teaching in Virginia before she took a position at Ridgecroft School where she has remained for the past 12 years. DiLustro also taught Freshman Composition at Chowan in 2005 before accepting her position at Ridgecroft. She is a member of the Southeastern Writing Center Association, National Council of Teachers of English, and Phi Kappa Phi.
Dr. Amin Rudaina Khalil joins the School of Fine and Applied Arts at Chowan as Associate Professor of Graphic Design. Dr. Khalil earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in visual design at the United States International University and his Bachelor of Fine Arts in environmental architecture design at Parsons School of Design. He has more than 20 years of experience as Creative Director with expertise in visual and graphic communications design, advertising design, film, fine arts, fashion design, and interior architecture. He teaches several graphic design courses. Dr. Khalil received the London International Design Award, twice. He earned the Pheonix De La Pub an advertising design award from Paris, France, and Best Practices Award (academic) from the Art Institute of California, San Diego, CA.
Dr. Sarah Reed joins the School of Business at Chowan as Assistant Professor of Economics.
Dr. Reed earned the Ph.D. in economics from the University of Delaware. She earned her Master of Science in economics and applied econometrics from the University of Delaware. She holds a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Reed teaches Foundations of Business along with economics courses. She received the Graduate Student Excellence in Teaching Award at the University of Delaware in 2018. Dr. Reed is a member of Omicron Delta Epsilon International Honor Society for Economics and Kappa Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society.
