Nine Hawks Selected For All-CIAA Football
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), with its Football Coaches Association and Sports Information Directors Association, releases the 2017 All-CIAA First, Second, Honorable Mention, and All-Rookie Football Teams.
Chowan featured nine players to the list with six players selected to All-CIAA team and three as All-Rookie selections.
Senior tight end, Drew Buck, garnered the lone All-CIAA First team selection for the Hawks. The Greenville, N.C. native caught 12 passes this season for 132 yards and two touchdowns.
Donald Boone earned his second straight All-CIAA Second Team selection as an offensive lineman. Boone helped the Hawks produce 371.5 yards of total offense per game including the second most rushing yards in a single season. The sophomore caught a three yard pass in the final home game of the season.
Torry Baker became the third Hawks wide receiver to earn All-CIAA Second Team honors. The Charlotte, N.C. native hauled in 46 receptions on the season for 626 yards and seven scores.
Tyler Bembry, Disputanta, Va. native, was second on the team in tackles (56) and first in tackles for loss (10.5). The junior added two sacks on the season along with a fumble recovery. Bembry adds his second All-CIAA honors to his resume.
Randy Allen Jr. is the fifth defensive back to receive All-CIAA Second Team honors. Allen Jr. led the team in tackles with 64. The senior added 5.5 tackles for loss and registered half a sack this season. The Newport News, Va. native was named CIAA Defensive Back of the Week during Week Nine of the season.
Nate Wyche notched his second All-CIAA Second Team selection despite having his season cut short. The senior tore through the league recording 8.0 sacks in just five games. The Suffolk, Va. native finished the season first in sacks (8.0), third in TFLs (8.0) and tied for eighth in tackles (31). Before missing the rest of the season, Wyche became the program's all-time sack leader.
Rafiq Abdul-Wahid, Bryce Witt, and Ra'Cee Lucas were named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team.
Abdul-Wahid tallied 20 tackles on the season with 5.5 TFLs and five quarterback hurries.
Bryce Witt is the first Chowan QB to receive an All-Rookie selection. Witt finished the season with 1992 yards and 19 touchdowns on 146 completions. Witt's 1992 yards is fifth most in a single season along with tied for third most touchdowns and sixth most completions in a single season.
Ra'Cee Lucas became the third CU wide receiver to be named to the All-Rookie team and first since 2012. Lucas recorded 13 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns.
