Hawks Volleyball Sweeps Panthers In Season Finale
RICHMOND, Va.- The Chowan Volleyball team wrapped up a perfect CIAA Northern Division season with a straight sets victory over Virginia Union on the road on Thursday evening.

Brittant Tschida led the charge for the Hawks with 13 kills. Karisa Patterson notched another double-double on the season with 10 kills and 28 assists. Patterson tallied six digs on the evening. Tschida notched four service aces.
Milicia Vejnovic tallied eight kills along with 15 digs. Bailey Zavala racked up 20 digs in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set: Chowan 25, Virginia Union 14
Chowan jumped out to an early 10-2 lead forcing VUU to call a timeout. The Hawks started on a 4-0 run grabbing kills by Karisa Patterson, Makayla Castro, Kayla Gates and Milicia Vejnovic before conceding a point. Three straight kills by Brittany Tschida forced the timeout.
Kills by Brittany Tschida, Courtney O'Keefe and Karisa Patterson allowed the Hawks to lead 17-7.
The Hawks maintained their sizable lead for the remainder of the match as Brittany Tschida served the Hawks to victory for the final three points.
Second Set: Chowan 26, Virginia Union 24
Early in the set, Virginia Union held a 9-5 lead. The Panther lead did not last long as Karisa Patterson tallied two kills along with a couple of VUU errors tied things at 10-all.
VUU pushed back to regain the lead midway through the set. The Hawks clawed back to tie the set at 18-all as the Panthers miscues helped the rally.
Courtney O'Keefe gabbed a kill followed by back-to-back service aces by Brittany Tschida caused VUU to burn a timeout as the Hawks led 21-18.
The Panthers rallied to knot the match at 23 and 24-all but Courtney O'Keefe ended the set with two kills to take the match 26-24.
Third Set: Chowan 25, Virginia Union 20
Virginia Union would hold an early 8-4 lead and later grew to 16-10 before the Hawks mounted a 15-4 run.
Milica Vejnovic notched back-to-back kills to spark the rally. Vejnovic continued to attack with Brittany Tschidaand Karisa Patterson bringing the Hawks to within one, 18-17.
Following a VUU timeout, the Panthers extended their lead to 20-17. Karisa Patterson halted the run with back-to-back kills. Brittany Tschida's two kills gave the Hawks their first lead of the set at 22-20 forcing the final timeout.
Milicia Vejnovic notched a service ace before a bad set and a Brittany Tschida kill ended the set and match.
UP NEXT
Chowan enters the 2017 CIAA Volleyball Championships with the top seed in the Northern Division and will face off against the Southern Division's fourth seeded, Johnson C. Smith. The opening match will take place at the Multipurpose Center at Virginia State on Friday, November 17 at 12pm.
