Hawks Volleyball Leashes Bulldogs At Home
MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team rolled to their second straight CIAA North Division win as the Hawks defeated the visiting Bulldogs of Bowie State in straight sets on Sunday afternoon.

Chowan is 16-0 all-time against Bowie State.
The Hawks produced strong attacking numbers as the team finished with a .366 attack percentage.
Makayla Castro paced the Hawks with 12 kills and six service aces. Sydney Bell chipped in with eight kills. Kayla Gates added seven kills and five service aces.
Bailey Zavala tallied a team-high eight digs on a quiet defensive night for the Hawks. The Bulldogs recorded only seven kills in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Set: Chowan 25, Bowie State 9
Chowan opened the contest on an 8-2 run as the Hawks picked up three points on bad sets by the Bulldogs. Courtney O'Keefe registered three kills during the early portion of the set.
The Hawks extended their lead to double-figures, 17-6, after kills by Brittany Tschida, Kayla Gates, and Makayla Castro.
Kayla Gates served the Hawks to a first set win, 25-9, on two service aces and a kill by Brittany Tschida.
2nd Set: Chowan 25, Bowie State 16
Chowan continued their momentum into the second frame as the Hawks forced a BSU timeout just four points in. Sydney Bell and Kayla Gates registered a kill along with two Bulldog errors.
Back-to-back kills by Makayla Castro sparked a Hawk rally to push the lead to 14-5. BSU would cut the deficit to five, 15-10 after a Hawk miscue. Makayla Castro and Sydney Bell picked up two kills each to push the lead back to eight, 20-12.
Once again, Kayla Gates served the Hawks to a set victory with a kill and two service aces. Courtney O'Keeferegistered the final kill in the set.
3rd Set: Chowan 25, Bowie State 9
Bowie State would gain their first lead of the contest early in the third set as the Hawks produced two errors.
Bailey Zavala would drop in a kill followed by Makayla Castro and Sydney Bell following suit to give the Hawks the lead 3-2.
Makayla Castro served up two service aces along with kills by Castro and Kayla Gates to widen the margin to 12-4.
The Bulldogs' misfortunes led to the Hawks' lead at 19-9. From there, Makayla Castro and company cruised to the end of the set with six straight points. Kayla Gates started the run with a kill while Castro served four straight aces to send it to set and match point. Sydney Bell sent the Hawks away with the victory on the final kill.

The Hawks return to the court on Monday, September 25, as Chowan faces Lincoln (Pa.) in a CIAA Northern Division match at home. First serve is at 6pm.
