Hawks Down Winston-Salem to Secure Spot in CIAA Women’s Championship Match
BOWIE MD- The Chowan University women's tennis team topped Winston-Salem State University 5-0 on Friday morning in the semifinal round of the CIAA Women's Tennis Championship. The Hawks advance to the CIAA Championship with the victory and will square off against the number two seed Shaw University on Saturday, April 22nd. Saturday's match-up will mark the third straight time that the Hawks and the Lady Bears have met with the conference championship on the line.
In doubles play, Polina Novachuk and Victoria Smolchenkova blanked Aja Grant and Gabrielle Lindsay 8-1 in number one doubles while Cynthia Carrier and Angelique Gouin defeated Alexus Morgan and China Brown 8-1 in the number two doubles match. The Golden Bulls dropped the third doubles position when Roxana Daneshjoo and Anna Makhneva beat Zakia Specer and Cylah Gaither 8-0 to give the Hawks an early 3-0 lead.
Heading into singles competition, Franca Pacelli and Makhneva both grabbed 6-0, 6-0 wins in the fifth and sixth positions, respectively, to secure the 5-0 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
