Chowan WLAX: Hawks Soar Past Bobcats for Conference Win
MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University women's lacrosse team picked up a decisive 12-9 win over Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the league after the match while the Bobcats fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Chowan opened the scoring quickly with back-to-back free position shots by Tashana Barnett and Alexandria Hammonds. With a 2-0 lead, Leslie Escobar scored a goal at the 20:13 mark of the first period to take a 3-1 lead over LMC. Escobar added another goal off a caused turnover at the 18:15 mark to spread the Chowan lead to 4-1. Chowan closed the half out with scores by Heather Orell and Jasmine Latney to take a 6-4 lead into the break.
The Hawks opened the second half with a score by Hammonds at the 26:42 mark for a 7-4 lead. After two scores by LMC, Barnett scored on a free position shot to spread the lead to 8-6. Chowan went on to the 12-9 final, getting their second Conference Carolinas win of the season.
Orell ended the match with four goals while Hammonds and Barnett each scored three goals. Hammonds collected 12 draw controls and seven ground balls in the win. Escobar was credited with two scores in the win.
As a team, Chowan was 13-13 in clear attempts and collected 28 ground balls. They out shot the Bobcats 32-30 in the match. The Hawks were 3-6 in free position shots with Barnett going 2-2.
Shaena Ravenell played 60:00 minutes in goal with six saves. Chowan will travel to Pfieffer University on Saturday, March 18th in their next outing.
