Chowan Softball: Hawks Sweep ESU to Wrap up Tournament

Mar 13, 2017 by Staff Reports

SALEM, VA –  The Chowan University softball team picked up two wins in final day play of the West Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament at Moyer Park in Salem, Virginia on Sunday afternoon. The Hawks swept East Stroudsburg in a doubleheader with scores of 8-0 and 6-4. Chowan improved their overall record to 15-13 after going 4-1 in the three day tournament.

Chowan posted eight runs in the final two at-bats to help lift them over the Warriors 8-0 in the first game. Senior hurler Kayla Robins struck out 14 Warrior batters for the win. Brittany Parson continued her hot hitting streak after a three run homerun in the bottom of the 6th inning. The Hawks capitalized off of five hits in the top of the 7th to spread their lead to 8-0. Robins and the defense held the Warriors off the board to pick up the 8-0 win.

Parson ended game one 3-4 with five RBI. Brook Bowen went 2-3 with two RBI and Haley Cooper ended the game 2-2.

The Hawks battled from behind to take the 6-4 night cap win. Shannon Buchanan started the game and pitched 4.1 innings. Trailing 3-1, Robins came in to throw the last 2.1 innings, picking up the win in relief. She struck out five batters. Tina White went 3-3 with a triple and Kris Neal went 2-3 with three RBI.

The Hawks will travel to Charlotte, North Carolina next weekend for the CIAA Round-Up. A game schedule will be released this week.
