Chowan Volleyball: Chris Guerra Promoted to Head Volleyball Coach
MURFREESBORO, NC – After serving one season as the assistant volleyball coach, Chris Guerra has been promoted to Head Volleyball Coach for Chowan University. Vice President for Athletics, Ozzie McFarland, announced on Thursday the promotion of Guerra from assistant coach to head coach. The transaction was completed in February of this year.
"I am eager to see Chris take the reins of this program and continue it's success and it's growth," stated McFarland. "I think we have a great staff in place to have success in the CIAA and in NCAA regional play."
Guerra was named Head Coach of the CU volleyball program in February of 2017. He served as the assistant coach during the fall of 2016 where he helped guide the Hawks to a 20-12 overall record and 14-2 CIAA record. The Hawks also claimed the 2016 CIAA Northern Division Regular Season title and had the 2016 CIAA Player of the Year in Suraya Chase.
Guerra stated. "I am very honored and excited to be part of the Chowan family. I am looking forward to a great season and working with motivated student-athletes".
Prior to joining the staff at Chowan, Guerra spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Nova Southeastern University. In that capacity, he developed practice plans, planned team travel arrangements, and tracked opponent tendencies all while working specifically with the team's defensive schemes.
Guerra gained experience coaching the Florida Suns U18 Girls Volleyball Club and serving as Head Coach for the boys and girls volleyball team at Cypress Bay High School. In 2013, Guerra led the Cypress Bay girls team to the District Championship and regional finals while guiding the boys team to both District and Regional Championship titles as well as the state quarterfinals. That same season, Guerra was named Sun-Sentinel Coach of the Year, and Miami Herald Coach of the Year.
He was a four-year starter and captain for the Warner University men's volleyball team. Guerra graduated from Warner in 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management.
