Hot Handed Hawks Fly By Bears

Jan 3, 2017 by Staff Reports

Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University men's basketball program shot 54% from the floor to help propel them to a 79-67 non-conference win over Lenoir-Rhyne University on Friday night. The Hawks improve to 8-2 on the year and maintain their home floor unbeaten streak (7-0). The Bears fall to 5-6 on the year after Friday's game.

The Hawks had four players net double-figures in the win, paced by senior Jeremy Smith. Smith poured in a game-high 22 points and hauled in eight rebounds. Kevin Kuteyi went 3-5 from beyond the three-point arch and hit 6-9 from the floor to get 15 points. Carlos Arroyo chipped in 12 points and dished out four assists while Tim Hewettcame off the bench to score 10 points. Marco Haskins added eight points, four assists, five boards, and two steals in 39 minutes of play.

Lenoir-Rhyne got on the board first in the game but it proved to be their only lead of the game. The Hawks hit 54% (29-53) from the floor and created 17 Bear turnovers to help push them to their eighth victory of the young season.

For Lenoir-Rhyne, Darrion Evans scored a team-high 15 points while Reed Lucas score 14 points, including hitting 4-6 three pointers.

Chowan will hit the road for three-straight road games in the new year. They open 2017 play at CIAA cross divisional rival, Johnson C. Smith University on January 5th in Charlotte and follow that up with trips to Winston-Salem State on January 7th and Livingstone College on January 9th. Fans can log on to the athletics website at www.gocuhawks.com for game day information.

The Hawks will return to the Helms Center on January 11th to play host to Salem International University in a non-conference game.
