Hawks Rally past Armstrong State
Box Score MORROW, GA- The Chowan University women's basketball team clinched an 86-85 overtime win over Armstrong State University on Saturday afternoon. Danielle Weldon's putback at the buzzer propelled the Hawks to the victory, and moved Chowan to 7-1 on the season. The Pirates slide to 4-5 on the season with the setback.
Mariah Coker led the effort for the Hawks with 17 points in the win. Chantel Roberts added 16 points and eight rebounds (four offensive, four defensive) for the Chowan Blue and White with Courtni Williams notching 13 points. Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jada Lee recorded 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Crenshaw was named to the Heritage Bank Classic All-Tournament Team, as announced Saturday evening.
Machala Raymonville led all players in the contest with 23 points for Armstrong State. Jessica Doyle notched 20 points for the Pirates in the setback with Mercedes Jenkins and Lauren Woods adding 18 points and 11 points, respectively.
The Hawks raced to a 9-2 lead at the start of the first quarter. The Pirates rallied back to knot the score 9-9 by the 6:29 mark. Both teams exchanged baskets over the next six minutes of play with Woods' basket securing a 24-23 lead for Armstrong State by the end of the first quarter.
Chowan led by as many as six points (37-31) in the second quarter before heading into the halftime break with a 37-34 edge.
The momentum shifted in favor of Armstrong State in the third quarter. The Pirates opened the quarter with a 10-1 run to take a 44-38 lead by the 5:44 mark. Armstrong State led by as many as 16 points (61-45) before heading into the last ten minutes with a commanding 61-49 advantage.
Down but not out, the Hawks clawed their way back from the deficit in the fourth quarter. Chowan persistently worked to orchestrate a 17-7 run to pull within two points (68-66) with 3:49 left in the game. The Hawks and Pirates exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the fourth quarter. The Hawks held a 77-74 lead with nine seconds left in the game before Doyle's three-pointer knotted the score 77-77, sending the contest into overtime.
Armstrong Stat clung to an 85-82 lead with 1:23 on the clock. Crenshaw hit a jumper with 23 seconds left in the game to bring the Hawks back within striking distance and Weldon sealed the 86-85 win with a putback at the buzzer.
The Hawks return to action on December 6th when Chowan plays host to the University of Mount Olive. The women's basketball home opener is slated for 5:30pm.
