Nov 21, 2016 by Staff Reports

Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team survived a late rally in an 85-82 victory over Davis & Elkins College on Sunday evening in the Helms Center.  The Hawks improve to 2-0 on the season with the win while the Senators drop to 0-3 on the year with the setback.

Jeremy Smith led all players in the contest with 26 points for the Hawks.   He also recorded 10 rebounds (six offensive, four defensive) for the Chowan Blue and White. Marco Haskins added 21 points in the victory with Kevin Kuteyi and Carlos Arroyo adding 14 points and 12 points, respectively.

Kevin Bracey-Davis tallied 22 points for Davis & Elkins with Teron Owens adding 21 points in the loss.  Kevin Simpson notched 21 points with Rickenjee Bellevue recording a team-high 12 rebounds (four offensive, eight defensive).

The first half was an all-out battle for control.  Back-to-back jumpers by the Senators at the start gave Davis & Elkins an early 4-0 lead.  Chowan regrouped to pull away 10-5 by the13:49 mark but the Senators fought back to knot the score 10-10 with 11:09 left to play.  The Hawks clung to a narrow 14-11 lead at the midway point before a three-pointer by Arroyo gave Chowan a 17-11 lead; their largest advantage of the half.  Davis & Elkins clawed their way back to take a 25-23 lead before a jumper by Haskins iced the game 25-25 at the 4:52 mark.  Both teams exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the first half and headed into halftime with the score tied 29-29.

Chowan came out firing at the start of the second half and quickly built their lead to 48-35 with 15:20 remaining the contest.  The Hawks pulled away by as many as 15 points (61-46) as late as the 10:30 mark after a three-pointer by Haskins.  Davis & Elkins refused to go away quietly and persistently chipped away at the deficit.  Trailing 78-66 with 1:51 left in the game, a basket by Bracy-Davis sparked a 14-2 run for the Senators and tied the score 80-80 with 40 seconds on the clock.  Andrew Lopez sunk two free throws to push Chowan ahead.  Clinging to an 83-82 lead with one second left in the game, Warren Powers drained two free throws to seal the 85-82 win for the Hawks.

Chowan returns to action on November 23rd as the Hawks travel to compete against UNC-Pembroke.  Game time is slated for 4pm.
