Hawks Capture Five Set Win over Limestone
Box Score GAFFNEY, SC- The Chowan University volleyball team earned a hard fought 3-2 win over Limestone College on Tuesday evening. The Hawks improve to 17-7 with the victory while the Saints slide to 7-16 overall with the loss. Tuesday's win marked the seventh straight victory for the Chowan Blue and White.
Chowan earned 25-17 and 25-22 wins in the first and second sets, respectively. Limestone recovered to earn a 25-23 victory in set three before topping Chowan 25-19 in set four. The Hawks edged the Saints 15-13 in set five to earn the road win.
Morgan Spencer led all players in the contest with 13 kills. Brittany Tschida and Suraya Chase both notched 10 kills for the Hawks while Caitlin Turner tallied 19 assists. Bailey Zavala hauled in 39 digs with Chase adding 24 in the victory.
Kaycee Tessitore led the effort for Limestone with 11 kills. Mia Bergan notched 19 assists with Taylor Berg recording 23 digs for the Saints.
The Hawks dominated early in the first set after racing to a 16-8 lead. The Saints fought back to pull within four points (20-16) down the final stretch in set one, but Chowan used a 5-1 run to capture the 25-17 victory.
Chowan and Limestone battled for control of the momentum in the second set. With the score tied 22-22, kills by Sydney Miller and Spencer along with a Saints' attack error allowed the Hawks to earn a 25-22 victory in set two.
Limestone stormed back from the early deficit, battling back for 25-23 and 25-19 wins in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
After trailing 8-4 in the fifth set, the Hawks took advance of three Limestone errors along with a kill by Caitlin Turner to knot the score 8-8. With the score tied 12-12, a kill by Kylie Moyer gave Limestone a 13-12 edge. A kill by Chase tied the score 13-13. Back-to-back kills by Spencer propelled the Hawks to the 15-13 set win, and secured the 3-2 match victory.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday as Chowan travels to Misenheimer, North Carolina to take on Belmont Abbey and Pfeiffer. Match times are slated for 2pm and 4pm, respectively.
