Hawks Top Virginia Union in Straight Sets, Earn Sixth Consecutive Win
Box Score RICHMOND, VA- The Chowan University volleyball team captured their sixth straight win on Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over Virginia Union University. The Hawks improve to 16-7 overall and 12-2 in CIAA play while the Lady Panthers slip to 11-9 on the year and 6-6 in league play. Chowan remains undefeated in CIAA Northern Division play with a 7-0 record. Virginia Union posts a 3-3 mark in divisional play.
The Hawks opened the match with a 25-15 win and edged Virginia Union 25-22 in set two. Set three featured a fierce battle between both teams, with Chowan outlasting the Lady Panthers for a 35-33 win.
Morgan Spencer led all players in the contest with 14 kills. Suraya Chase followed with 12 kills for the Hawks. Karisa Patterson dished out 20 assists while Alyssa Born added 11 assists in the victory. Chase notched a team-high nine digs while Patterson and Bailey Zavala each collected seven digs for the Hawks.
Adrianna Bethel and Jayshil Oatley led the effort for Virginia Union with eight kills. A'Maria Wright handed out 28 assists with Oatley notching ten digs.
The Hawks raced to a 4-0 lead at the start of the first set and never looked back. Chowan led by three or more points for the duration of the opening set and secured the 25-15 win after a Virginia Union service error.
Chowan and Virginia Union battled through set two, with neither team able to gain a full grip on the momentum. The Hawks clung to a narrow 23-22 advantage late in set two before back-to-back kills by Spencer secured the 25-22 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
Set three featured in all-out battle by both teams. Chowan gained an early 10-5 advantage before Virginia Union stormed back to take an 11-10 lead. From there, the Hawks and Lady Panthers fought through 15 ties before Chowan secured the win. With the score knotted 33-33, a kill by Courtney O'Keefe and service ace propelled the Hawks to the 35-33 victory.
The Hawks return to action on October 25th as the Hawks travel to take on Limestone College. Match time is slated for 6pm.
