Hawks Topple Claflin
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University volleyball team downed Claflin University in straight sets on Friday evening in the Helms Center. The Hawks improve to 15-7 on the year with the win while the Lady Panthers slide to 10-5 overall with the setback. Friday's match marked the fifth straight victory for the Hawks.
Chowan opened the set with a 25-15 win, edged Claflin 25-23 in set two, and secured the match with a 25-15 victory in set three.
Suraya Chase recorded 11 kills for the Hawks followed by Courtney O'Keefe with seven kills on the evening. Caitlin Turner handed out 14 assist while Bailey Zavala hauled in 16 digs for the Chowan Blue and White.
Bria Bronston led the effort for Claflin with eight kills. Sonia Rosales tallied 10 assists while Alexcia Herring notched 10 digs in the loss.
In the opening set, with the score tied 4-4, a kill by Chase led to a 10-0 run for the Hawks. Chowan kept a firm grip on the momentum and secured the 25-15 win after a Claflin attack error.
The Hawks kept the momentum rolling in set two and quickly jumped to an 11-4 advantage. With Chowan leading 18-11, the Lady Panthers fought back with a 6-0 run to pull within one point (18-17). The Hawks and Lady Panthers exchanged points down the final stretch of the set. With the score tied 22-22, a Chowan service error gave Claflin the lead, but two Lady Panther attack errors and a kill by O'Keefe secured the 25-23 win for the Hawks.
Chowan and Claflin battled for control early in set three. With Chowan holding a 17-14 advantage, a 6-0 run by the Hawks left the Lady Panthers trailing 23-14. After a kill by Claflin's Gabrielle Williams, back-to-back kills by Miller and Tschida secured the 25-15 set three win for Chowan.
Chowan returns to action as the Hawks travel to take on Virginia Union University. Match time is slated for1pm.
