Chowan University Hosts 2024 Senior Banquet, Celebrating Graduating Class

May 1, 2024 by Zoe Beale

On Thursday, April 25th, Chowan University hosted its annual Senior Banquet, a cherished tradition that brings together students, faculty, and staff to reflect on their Chowan experience. The event was a resounding success, filled with heartfelt speeches and memorable moments.

The evening commenced with a warm welcome from Kay Thomas, Director of Alumni Relations, who expressed her gratitude to all those in attendance. Following the welcome, Mary Shomper captivated the audience with a reading of Psalm 1, setting a contemplative tone for the evening. Braydon Conboy then delivered a moving invocation, invoking a sense of unity and purpose.

Dr. Danny Moore, taking the podium after the dinner, delivered an inspiring speech that focused on the unique interactions he shared with the prospective graduates. His words resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the transformative power of education and the impact it can have on individuals and communities.

Music major Malachi Cobb followed with a heartfelt speech, emphasizing the incredible opportunities he had been given at Chowan. His words echoed the sentiment shared by many students who have found their passion and purpose within the university’s nurturing environment.

The evening continued with Skyler Davies, a graduate of the Integrative Studies program, sharing how his passion for photography allowed him to capture countless moments on campus. He emphasized the importance of embracing all of life’s moments and cherishing the memories made during their time at Chowan.

Manuela Jimenez, from the Mathematics Department, shared her experience of finding a second home on campus despite being far from her native country. Her story highlighted the sense of community and belonging that Chowan fosters.

Olivia Wheeler, an Elementary Education (K-6) graduate, shared her journey of choosing Chowan, even when uncertainty clouded her path. Her story exemplified the resilience and determination of Chowan students, who overcome obstacles to pursue their dreams.

President Rosemary M. Thomas concluded the speeches by challenging all graduates to make a difference in the world, no matter how small. She reminded them that even the smallest act of kindness or change can have a profound impact on someone’s life.

The evening culminated with the 2024 Commencement Marshalls leading the graduating class to Kerr Gazebo for the Ringing of The Bell Ceremony. This symbolic tradition marks the completion of a student’s journey at Chowan as they ring the bell for the second time, having first rung it during the fall Convocation as incoming freshmen.

With faculty and staff lining the Alumni Walk, the graduates were able to witness the unwavering support of the faculty who guided them throughout their academic journey.

Chowan University is immensely proud of its graduating class and eagerly anticipates their crossing of the stage at the upcoming commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4th. Congratulations to the Class of 2024 for their remarkable achievements and the bright futures that lie ahead.
