Chowan University Business Students partner with Nucor Hertford for Business Strategy Course
Last week, students in the Chowan University Business Department had the unique opportunity to tour the mill at Nucor Hertford and engage with Nucor teammates over lunch. In the days following the tour, they put their newfound knowledge to the test by participating in Nucor’s Dollars & Tons simulation, where they had the chance to run their own mill in their classroom.

The immersive experience was part of the senior capstone case study on Nucor, a collaboration between Chowan University and Nucor Hertford. The case study aims to provide graduating students with a comprehensive understanding of different industries, preparing them for the challenges they may face in their future careers.
During the mill tour, students witnessed firsthand the intricate processes involved in steel production. They had the opportunity to interact with Nucor teammates, who generously shared their expertise and insights. This invaluable experience allowed the students to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and its operations.
Building on this foundation, the students then applied their knowledge in the Dollars & Tons simulation. This interactive exercise allowed them to make critical decisions and experience the complexities of running a mill. By facing real-world challenges and making strategic choices, the students developed their problem-solving skills and gained practical experience in a controlled environment.
Experiences such as this make the Life Skills Core at Chowan even more exciting, and the Chowan University Business Department is committed to providing its students with hands-on experiences that enhance their learning and prepare them for success in the business world. The partnership with Nucor Hertford exemplifies this commitment, offering students a valuable opportunity to apply their knowledge and gain real-world experience.
