Chowan University Criminal Justice Students Gain Real-World Experience Through Local Law Enforcement Partnerships
Chowan University’s Criminal Justice 305 class recently had the opportunity to visit the Franklin Police Department (FPD) and gain firsthand knowledge of the inner workings of law enforcement. The visit included a tour of the 911 dispatch area, where the students were able to witness the crucial role played by dispatchers in emergency situations.
During the visit, Chief Patterson took the time to speak with the students, providing valuable insights into the challenges and rewards of a career in law enforcement. The students were also given the opportunity to try out the obstacle course and simulator, allowing them to experience the physical and mental demands of the job. To show their appreciation, the students were treated to a delicious lunch by the FPD.
One of the highlights of the visit was the chance to meet Roasis Knight, a Chowan University graduate who completed an internship with the FPD and was immediately offered employment. Knight’s success story serves as an inspiration to her fellow students, as she will be walking across the stage on May 4th, knowing that she has already put her degree to work.
In addition to the visit to the FPD, earlier this month, the criminal justice seniors participated in a firearms simulation training at the Edenton Police Department. The training aimed to enhance their split-second decision-making skills, a crucial aspect of a career in law enforcement. The detectives at the Edenton Police Department went above and beyond, dedicating their time to explain and answer questions, ensuring that the students were given every opportunity to succeed.
With the recent establishment of the Crime Lab on the third floor of Marks Hall, Chowan University is now equipped to provide a space for more extensive training on campus. This new facility will enable students to gain practical experience in forensic analysis and evidence processing, further preparing them for careers in criminal justice.
Chowan University is grateful to the Franklin Police Department and the Edenton Police Department for their ongoing support and commitment to providing valuable learning experiences for our students. These partnerships play a vital role in preparing the next generation of criminal justice professionals.
