Betty Jo Shepheard Joins Chowan University’s Board of Trustees
Chowan University is pleased to announce the appointment of Betty Jo Shepheard to its Board of Trustees. Born and raised in Edgecombe County, Shepheard attended Edgecombe Public Schools before pursuing continuing education courses at Edgecombe Community College. She also served on the Board of Trustees at the college, demonstrating her commitment to education in the community.
Shepheard’s professional career spanned 26 years at Sprint – Carolina Telephone, where she made significant contributions to the telecommunications industry. After retiring from Sprint in 2003, she joined the Richard Burr Committee in 2004, working tirelessly to support U.S. Senator Richard Burr. Her dedication led to her appointment as the Eastern North Carolina Field Representative for Senator Burr from 2005 to 2023. During this time, she traveled extensively throughout 30 counties in North Carolina, ensuring Senator Burr remained informed about local developments.
Throughout her tenure with Senator Burr, Shepheard developed a strong bond with Chowan University. She continued to visit the university and actively served on the Board of Visitors. Her commitment to higher education and her understanding of the university’s mission make her an invaluable addition to the Board of Trustees.
In recognition of her outstanding service, Shepheard was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Roy Cooper in 2022, just prior to her retirement from the U.S. Senate. She also serves on the NC 4-H Advisory Council for Northeastern North Carolina and is a member of the Rocky Mount Rotary club, taking time to contribute to the community.
As an active member of Chowan University’s campus, Shepheard has been involved in various initiatives and events. Most notably, she delivered a captivating speech at the university’s 175th celebration, representing former United States Senator Burr. Her dedication to the institution and her ability to connect with the audience made her an ideal candidate for the Board of Trustees.
Shepheard’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for Chowan University as it continues to navigate the challenges posed by the ongoing pivot into a Life Skills University. Her expertise and insights will be invaluable in guiding the university’s decision-making process and ensuring its long-term success.
As a member of the Board of Trustees, Shepheard will collaborate with other esteemed individuals to support Chowan University’s strategic goals, including advancing academic excellence, promoting student success, and strengthening community partnerships.
