The International Student Club Showcases Life Skills at ISC Fashion Show
The International Student Club at Chowan University hosted a spectacular fashion show on February 15th in Turner Auditorium, showcasing the diverse talents and fashion styles of students from over 31 countries. The event, held in honor of breast cancer survivor Libby Whitaker and in memory of Dawn Formo, aimed to raise funds for Relay for Life while promoting cancer education.
Under the guidance of sponsor Jill Awuni, the International Student Club successfully organized an evening filled with fashion, talent, and inspiration. The event not only celebrated cultural diversity but also served as a platform to raise awareness about cancer and empower students to become their own health advocates.
“There is no better place to be on a Thursday night,” said Debra Maingi. An international student herself, and a 2012 alumna of Chowan University, graced the occasion and shared her life experiences both at the university and beyond. Maingi’s presence and heartfelt words resonated with the students, igniting a sense of passion and motivation. Her inspiring speech encouraged students to embrace leadership roles and take charge of their own health.
“I had little to do with it,” Awuni said to the crowd of students and faculty. “You talk about life skills – this is it in real life.” Chowan University, in its pursuit of becoming a Life Skills University, actively supports student-led initiatives that foster leadership and confidence. The success of the International Student Club Fashion Show exemplifies the university’s commitment to empowering students and creating a vibrant campus community. With their dedication in promoting the event, leading the event, as well as selling tickets and concessions, we see so many life skills that we are excited to foster in these students.
Chowan University remains dedicated to providing its students with opportunities to develop essential life skills and become well-rounded individuals. The International Student Club Fashion Show stands as a shining example of the university’s commitment to nurturing strong leaders and fostering a sense of community.
