Murfreesboro Lions Club Leaves Lasting Legacy – Establishes Leadership Scholarship Endowment at Chowan University
On April 9, 2022, the Murfreesboro Lions Club established the Murfreesboro Lions Club Scholarship Endowment Fund in the amount of $20,000 to support future Chowan University students. Remaining members representing the club were Mr. Henry L. Miller, Mr. Danny Blowe, Mrs. Betz Blowe, Mr. Nathan L. Woodard, and Mr. Buddy Wise all of whom were on hand for the presentation made to Dr. Kirk E. Peterson, President.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be currently enrolled at or admitted to attend Chowan University, part of the Leadership Scholars Program, demonstrate strong leadership ability, seek and hold leadership positions on campus, and possess leadership qualities to include inspiring others, showing empathy, exhibiting confidence, integrity, humility, accountability, resilience, honesty, truthfulness, compassion, and vision.
The scholarship will give first preference to students in rank order from Murfreesboro, Hertford County, the Roanoke-Chowan area, and then North Carolina, and all recipients must demonstrate financial need to be considered for the scholarship. Additionally, students who are visually impaired will be given preference.
The Murfreesboro Lions Club is one of the more than 48,000 Lions Clubs around the world with more than 1.4 million members who are helping others and making communities better while developing leadership skills. With the changing landscape of service organizations in the region, the Murfreesboro Lions Club is in the process of disbanding and has elected to establish this scholarship as a lasting legacy of the club’s impact over many years. Established on February 20, 1950, the scholarship acknowledges and honors the contribution of all members since the club’s inception.
“Rewarding leadership ability and service to the community was important to the remaining members of the club. The Murfreesboro Lions Club Scholarship Endowment preserves the legacy of the club while making a significant impact in the life of a student each year and for generations to come,” stated John M. Tayloe, Executive Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving.
