Buchanan Pitches Hawks Past Broncos In Early Game
The Chowan Softball team picked up the opening victory of the 2019 CIAA Softball Championship against Fayetteville State behind a dominant pitching performance of Shannon Buchanan for the 7-0 victory.

Shannon Buchanan (9-6) picked up the win tossing the complete game shutout allowing two hits and striking out seven.
Miranda Glover went 2-3 in the contest with a home run and three RBI. Haley Cooper and Jesse Gentry picked up two hits each in the win. Gentry and Brittany Parson recorded a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Haley Cooper started off the contest with a single to shortstop. A fielder's choice wiped away the hit. Jesse Gentry would double down the left field line to put runners in scoring position. Lindsey Stigler hit a rocket to third and Beth Walker was tagged out at third. Brittany Parson put a double down the right field to score Gentry. Miranda Glover would give the Hawks a 4-0 lead with a three-run home run to left center.
Shannon Buchanan allowed a walk in the second but would be wiped away as Lindsey Stigler gunned down the runner at first. Buchanan would pick up two strikeouts in the third to keep the Broncos off the bases.
Beth Walker would reach on an infield single up the middle. Pinch runner, Mikayla Luskin, would swipe second and moved to third on Lindsey Stigler's blooper to left field. Luskin scored on the throw down as pinch runner, Meredith Morgan, swiped second base. Miranda Glover singled to third base but the runner heading home from second would be thrown out.
Fayetteville State would pick up their first two hits in the contest in the fifth inning but Shannon Buchanan would get out of the jam with a couple of groundouts.
Jesse Gentry picked up a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to reach scoring position.
Miranda Glover reached on a one-out error to the shortstop. Shannon Buchanan and Hannah Naifeh reached on infield singles to load the bases. Haley Cooper plated a run with a blooper in between the pitcher and the shortstop to give the Hawks a 6-0 advantage. Beth Walker drew a bases-loaded walk to plate another run.
Shannon Buchanan would finish off the contest with a pair of flyouts to take the contest.
