Pitching Leads Hawks To CIAA Sweep Over VUU
The Chowan Softball team picked up another CIAA Northern Division sweep taking the doubleheader against Virginia Union on Sunday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES
Brittany Parson led the Hawks at the plate going 5-6 with a double, a grand slam, and six RBI. Beth Walker went 4-5 at the plate scoring six runs with two doubles and four walks.
Miranda Glover picked up three doubles and four RBI. Jesse Gentry picked up four hits and scored six runs.
EmaRae Flores and Shannon Buchanan picked up the wins in the circle with complete game victories. Buchanan struck out a career-high 10 batters.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 16, Virginia Union 2 (five innings)
Haley Cooper and Beth Walker started off the contest with walks. Brittany Parson plated a run as she reached on an error. Miranda Glover doubled to center to push the lead to 3-0 early.
Virginia Union tallied a run in the bottom of the inning as the lead-off batter tripled and scored on an error. The Panthers picked up two singles but three straight outs ended the threat.
Chowan added three more runs in the third inning to lead 6-1. Beth Walker singled to lead off the inning. Jesse Gentry doubled to left field before Lindsey Stigler loaded the bases with a hit by pitch. Brittany Parson singled home a run before Miranda Glover hit a sac fly to plate another. A wild pitch allowed Stigler to score.
The Panthers closed the gap with a run in the bottom of the third on three hits, 6-2. The Hawks opened up the contest in the fourth inning as Donya Salman, Haley Cooper, and Beth Walker drew walks to load the bases. Jesse Gentry and Lindsey Stigler plated a run by reaching base before Brittany Parson unloaded the bases with a grand slam to push the advantage to 12-2.
Chowan added four more runs in the fifth inning as Beth Walker, Mackenzie Taggart, and Kelsey Sonntag reached with two outs on free passes. Kerrin Mailhot and EmaRae Flores singled home a pair each to lead 16-2.
EmaRae Flores shut the door in the fifth to take the victory.
Game Two: Chowan 11, Virginia Union 5
Chowan jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with a pair of runs. Beth Walker drew a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Walker came around to score as Jesse Gentry singled. Lindsey Stigler singled before Brittany Parson doubled home Gentry for the 2-0 lead.
Shannon Buchanan struck out three of the four batters in the first inning. Buchanan allowed a single in the second but was erased trying to stretch into a double.
The Hawks added a run in the third inning as Jesse Gentry singled to left to start the inning. Gentry came around to score as Brittany Parson singled and an error on the play allowed the run to score, 3-0.
Shannon Buchanan continued to deal in the circle allowing a walk and a single in the fourth but pitched out of the small jam without a run scoring.
Brittany Parson and Miranda Glover sparked a rally in the fifth inning with a single and double respectively. Shannon Buchanan singled home a pair to lead 5-0.
Virginia Union rallied to cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning posting four hits and using two Hawks miscues.
Chowan countered with four runs in the sixth on four hits and three Panther miscues. Mackenzie Taggart and Beth Walker singled. Two errors allowed both runners to score. Serena Riley singled home a run before scoring on Miranda Glover's single to lead 9-4.
The Hawks added two runs in the seventh inning, 11-4, to take the victory. Haley Cooper singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Beth Walker doubled home Cooper before Jesse Gentry singled home a run.
The Panthers would score a run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 11-5 but Shannon Buchanan picked up a punch out looking to end the attempted rally.
