Hawks Cruise Past Trojans For CIAA Sweep

The Chowan Softball team honored their two seniors with a sweep of CIAA Northern Division rival, Virginia State, on Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS

FINAL GAME ONE | Chowan 8, Virginia State 0 (five innings)

FINAL GAME TWO | Chowan 10, Virginia State 4

RECORDS | Chowan 13-20 (4-0, 9-2), Virginia State 13-19 (4-2, 9-4)

LOCATION | Murfreesboro, N.C. (Hawks Softball Field)

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Seniors, Haley Cooper and Donya Salman were honored during the contests.  Cooper finished 3-5 at the plate with two doubles.  Salman went 1-3 with two walks and a RBI.

Beth Walker tallied four hits at the plate with two doubles and two RBI.  Lindsey Stigler hit a home run and produced five RBI.  Miranda Glover went 2-2 with four walks, a home run, and three RBI.

Shannon Buchanan and EmaRae Flores picked up wins in the circle tossing complete games.  Flores tossed a one hitter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 8, Virginia State 0 (five innings)

Virginia State picked up two walks in the inning but EmaRae Flores picked up a strikeout to end the threat.

Haley Cooper and Beth Walker produced back-to-back doubles to start the bottom half to plate the opening run.  Jesse Gentry tripled to right to score Walker.  Lindsey Stigler hit a sac fly to score Gentry.  Brittany Parson drew a walk before scoring on Miranda Glover's two-run homer to lead 5-0.

The Hawks would push the advantage to 8-0 in the bottom of the second inning.  Donya Salman led off the inning with a walk.  Haley Cooper was hit by a pitch before Jesse Gentry walked to load the bases.  Lindsey Stigler singled up the middle before Brittany Parson and Miranda Glover's walks with the bases loaded plated a run for the 8-0 lead.

The Trojans picked up their first hit in the contest in the fourth inning.

Game Two: Chowan 10, Virginia State 4

Virginia State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as an error allowed a run to score.

The Hawks looked to answer in the second inning as Miranda Glover drew a walk.  Shannon Buchanan singled and moved up to second allowing Glover to move to third.  Two quick outs ended the threat.

Chowan evened the score in the third inning as Haley Cooper drew a walk to start the inning.  Beth Walker and Jesse Gentry singled to load the bases.  Lindsey Stigler hit a sac fly to plate Cooper to even the score at 1-all.

Shannon Buchanan pitched out of a jam in the fourth inning as two hits put runners in scoring position but a fly out ended the threat.

The Hawks used a strong fourth inning to take control of the contest.  Miranda Glover sparked the rally with a lead-off walk and stole second.  A sac bunt by Shannon Buchanan pushed Glover to third.  Donya Salman singled to plate Glover before coming around to score on Haley Cooper's double to left.  Cooper would score on Beth Walker's single.  Jesse Gentry picked up a double before a passed ball allowed Walker to score.  Lindsey Stigler hit a two-run home run to give the Hawks a 7-1 lead.  Brittany Parson, Glover and Buchanan loaded the bases with singles before the final out was recorded.

Beth Walker doubled in the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch to lead 8-1.  The Trojans would cut into the deficit in the sixth inning with two runs, 8-3.

The Hawks grabbed those two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Miranda Glover and Meredith Morgandrew one-out walks.  Kerrin Mailhot reached on an error allowing both Glover and Morgan to score.

Virginia State added a run in the seventh inning to trail 10-4 before a double play ended the contest.
