Hawks Take Series

Behind the big bats of Marquise Lanier and Jack Kane, the Chowan Baseball team took the series against nationally ranked Mount Olive with a split on Saturday afternoon in Conference Carolinas action.

THE BASICS

FINAL GAME ONE | Chowan 6, #17 Mount Olive 9 (nine innings)

FINAL GAME TWO | Chowan 11, #17 Mount Olive 3

RECORDS | Chowan 11-12-1 (7-7), Mount Olive 19-8 (9-5)

LOCATION | Murfreesboro, N.C. (Hawkins Field)

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Wyatt Beakler picked up the win on the mound tossing a complete game allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and six strikeouts.

Marquise Lanier went 3-7 at the plate with two doubles and two home runs.  Lanier added six RBI.  Jack Kane went 4-8 with two home runs and six RBI.

Nicholas Lees went 2-2 with two walks in the early game.  Nick Rose picked up two hits and two RBI in the night cap.

Chowan forced Mount Olive to use eight pitchers in the doubleheader.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Chowan 6, Mount Olive 9 (nine innings)

In the opening contest, Mount Olive took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a sac fly.  The Hawks looked to answer in the bottom of the inning as Jack Kane, Harley Davidson, and Nicholas Lees drew walks to load the bases.  The Trojans picked up a strikeout to end the threat.

Mount Olive added two runs in the fourth inning to lead 3-0.

Chowan was able to break through in the fifth inning.  Nicholas Lees singled to start the inning.  Trenton Lee singled before two wild pitches led to the opening run.  Brock Cross drew a walk before Marquise Lanier hit a three-run home run to take a 4-3 lead. 

On the first pitch of the new pitcher, Jack Kane homered to extend the advantage to 5-3.

The Trojans answered in the sixth inning with a three-run home run to regain the lead 6-5.

In the final at-bat, Marquise Lanier doubled down the left field line.  Jack Kane would bring Lanier home on a single up the middle to even the score at six and send the contest into extra innings.

UMO picked up a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to lead 9-6.  Brock Cross singled up the middle and Jared Fry drew a walk but the rally would fall short.

Game Two: Chowan 11, Mount Olive 3

Mount Olive took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sac fly.  Nick Rose singled in the bottom of the first and moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt but was left stranded.

The Trojans pushed a run across in the third inning as an error and wild pitch led to a run, 2-0.

The Hawks would rally in the bottom of the third inning.  Anthony Jefferson started off the rally with a single up the middle.  Trenton Lee singled to right before Brock Cross picked up a single to plate Jefferson.  Marquise Lanier hit a sac fly to even the score, 2-all.

Jack Kane gave the Hawks a 4-2 lead with a two-run home run.  Jared Fry and Noah Cartwright picked up singles but would be left stranded.

Chowan added to the lead in the fourth inning as Anthony Jefferson started another rally with a walk.  Trenton Lee singled and moved up to second on the throw.  Nick Rose singled home Jefferson and Lee to chase another pitcher, 6-2.  Marquise Lanier hit his second home run of the day and fourth in the series to push the lead to 8-2.

UMO added a run in the sixth inning on a sac fly to trim the deficit to 8-3.

The Hawks countered with a three-run sixth inning to take the contest 11-3.  Brock Cross singled and Marquise Lanier drew a walk to start the inning.  Jack Kane doubled down the left field line and Jared Fry picked up a RBI ground out.

Wyatt Beakler finished off the contest in the seventh inning with three quick outs.
