On March 19, Chowan University recognized John Davis, Distinguished Professor of English, and Timothy Hayes, Assistant Professor of English with the 2018-19 Faculty Excellence in Community Service Award at a dinner honoring the award finalists. This is an annual award presented to faculty who are involved with charitable, nonprofit, church, public service, or similar organizations in his or her community; dedicated to strengthening the spirit of civic engagement; committed toward furthering the practice of service learning; participate in the life of the university that transcends professional responsibility; and/or contribute professional experience in service of the wider community.

Other finalists for the 2019 award were: Brian Duffy, Assistant Professor of Chemistry; Joel McCormick, Assistant Professor of Recreation; and Catherine Vickers, Instructor in English.
