Chowan University sophomore presents at North Carolina Symposium

Nov 29, 2018 by Staff Reports

Grace Arredondo, a sophomore English major, presented at the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) at North Carolina State University.

Arredondo’s presentation, entitled "Should I Stay or Should I Go?: A Literary Analysis of Immigration in Kiran Desai's Novel The Inheritance of Loss," was based on an essay she wrote in Dr. Tim Hayes's ENGL 430: "Immigrant Voices in Modern Fiction" class in Spring 2018.

Her literary analysis focused on the two main characters of the novel, who originate from the same village in India, yet have drastically different experiences. The two different perspectives of the characters shine light on personal narratives that are often forgotten in conversations about immigration. “Society either takes a pro or con stance, yet neglects the facets and stories that go unheard from all the political noise,” Arredondo explained.

Arredondo had the opportunity to network with other students from universities across the state and learn about their research. “The energy that surged throughout the building was surreal and I was honored to be a part of it.” Arredondo continued, “My presentation about immigration was also especially meaningful because my father was born in Valle Hermoso, Mexico. My grandfather labored tirelessly to make his wife, four children, and himself legal citizens before they immigrated to Springfield, Illinois. Their journey was never easy, but their toil was worth it. Because of their decision to immigrate to this country of immigrants, I have been blessed with the life I live now.”

The SNCURCS is open to all undergraduate students enrolled in NC colleges, universities, or community colleges, and high school students who have completed a monitored research project through an accredited university or research program. Presentations include oral, poster, and performance options.

Please join Chowan University in congratulating Grace Arredondo.
