Hawks Steal Bases and Series Against Trojans
PETERSBURG, VA. – The Chowan Baseball team picked up the doubleheader sweep of Virginia State on the road to take the season series on Tuesday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Julian Lopez picked up four hits in the doubleheader going 3-4 in the first contest. Lopez swiped three bags in the nightcap and four total. Chowan posted 18 stolen bases in the doubleheader with a school record 14 in the nightcap.
Harry Markotay went 2-3 in the first contest to extend his hitting streak to 15 games but went 0-3 in the nightcap as the streak ended. Nick Rose picked up a hit in both contests to extend his on base streak to 23 games.
Trent Brosdahl led the attack in the nightcap with a three-run home run. Brosdahl finished with four RBI.
Josh Vincent moved to 5-1 on the season tossing 6.1 innings and struck out six. Vinny Puma picked up the save in the first game tossing 0.2 innings to slam the door.
Will Edwards picked up the win to even his record at 2-2 on the season in the nightcap tossing 5.0 innings allowing two runs (one earned) off five hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One: Chowan 6, Virginia State 4
Chowan struck first in the top of the first inning as Marquise Lanier started the inning with a base hit. Lanier came around to score on Julian Lopez's single to right field to lead 1-0.
The Hawks would add a run in the third inning as Anthony Jefferson started the inning with a double to left. Harry Markotay extended his hitting streak with a hit to left to bring home Jefferson.
Virginia State cut into the deficit in the bottom of the inning as an error sparked the inning. A fly out and a ground out allowed the runner to come around to score.
Three hits in the top of the sixth increased the Hawks' lead to 4-1 as Julian Lopez singled to start the inning. Lopez advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on Nick Rose's single to center. Rose would score on a Tyler Jones base hit to left.
The Trojans scored a run in the bottom of the sixth on a triple to close the gap to 4-2.
The Hawks put pressure on the Trojans in the seventh inning as Anthony Jefferson reached on a bunt single before swiping second and third. Marquise Lanier brought home Jefferson on a sacrifice fly. Julian Lopez singled to left to score Harry Markotay, who reached on a walk in the inning, to increase the lead to 6-2.
Vinny Puma would pick up the save pitching the seventh inning after Josh Vincent ran into a jam. Puma picked up a strikeout and a ground out to end the contest but not before the Trojans rallied to score two runs.
Game Two: Chowan 9, Virginia State 2
Harry Markotay walked to start the contest and swiped second before Julian Lopez doubled to left to score the opening run. Trent Brosdahl hit a sacrifice fly to push the advantage to 2-0.
An error and a double in the bottom of the inning allowed the Trojans to close the gap to 2-1.
The Hawks would hang a crooked number on the board in the second inning as Chowan pushed the advantage to 8-1. Corey Bolam singled to left and stole second. Anthony Jefferson drew a walk and stole second to put runners in scoring position with two outs. A wild pitch allowed Bolam to score. Marquise Lanier was hit by a pitch and stole second before Jefferson and Lanier performed a double steal to swipe home and third respectively.
Julian Lopez drew a walk before the Hawks performed another double steal of home and second this time to push the lead to 5-1. Nick Rose drew a walk to chase the Trojans' starting pitcher. Trent Brosdahl welcomed the pitcher with a three-run home run to push the lead to 8-1.
The Trojans would get a run back in the bottom of the fifth as a triple scored a run to close the deficit to 8-2.
Marquise Lanier tripled to center with one out in the sixth before Nick Rose brought Lanier home with a single to center.
VSU looked to add some runs in the sixth inning but Trenton Lee came in and closed the door grabbing two strikeouts with the bases loaded.
