Jan 23, 2018 by Staff Reports

MURFREESBORO, NC –Dr. Warren Milteer, Jr. will headline this year’s Rouson Memorial Lecture, held February 7th at 11am in Turner Auditorium inside McDowell Columns Hall on the Chowan University campus.

Dr. Warren Milteer, Jr. is an assistant professor of history at the University of South Carolina. He specializes in the history of Early America and the nineteenth-century United States. His interests include free people of color, slavery, race, and Native America. He received his PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2014. Dr. Milteer earned his Master of Arts at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and his Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina State University. He has recently completed a book manuscript about free people of color in North Carolina from the colonial period through reconstruction.

His publications include Hertford County, North Carolina’s Free People of Color and Their Descendants (2016) and articles in the Journal of Social History and North Carolina Historical Review. He was the recipient of the Historical Society of North Carolina’s R. D. W. Connor Award in 2014 and 2016 for the best journal article in the North Carolina Historical Review. He received the North Carolina Genealogical Society’s Award for Excellence in a Publication Relevant to North Carolina Genealogy in 2016.

Dr. Milteer will be presenting the Rouson Lecture on February 7th. The lecture is named for Reverend and Mrs. Rouson who were noted Hertford County religious leaders whose legacy of religious stewardship, family values and community service lives on today in the lives of their children, former students, co-workers and county residents.  “The purpose of this event is to recognize Christian values, brotherhood, stewardship, and the importance of family,” stated local historian Alice Eley Jones, “to recognize good Christians who do good deeds for their community.”

Dr. Milteer will sign copies of his book, Hertford County, North Carolina’s Free People of Color and Their Descendants, which will be available for purchase or can be purchased on amazon.com.

Please join us on February 7th at 11:00 am in Turner Auditorium as we honor Dr. Warren Milteer at the annual Reverend George T. and Luvenia B. Rouson Memorial Lecture. Admission is free and open to the public.
