CU Volleyball Wins In Five Against Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – The Chowan Volleyball team picked up a 3-2 victory over Mount Olive on the road in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
The Hawks produced a season-high 102 digs in the match as five Hawks recorded double-figure digs. Bailey Zavala led the Hawks with 25 digs, while Makayla Castro tallied 23.
Karisa Patterson notched another double-double with 42 assists and 13 digs. Patterson had two solo rejections on the night.
Milica Vejnovic recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Courtney O'Keefe grabbed 10 digs and seven kills.
Brittany Tschida paced the Hawks on the offensive end with 14 kills. Kayla Gates added eight kills and nine digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Set: Chowan 21, Mount Olive 25
Mount Olive jumped out to an early lead as the Hawks faced a 9-5 deficit. The Trojans maintained their advantage throughout the set as the UMO lead climbed to 20-13.
Out of a Chowan timeout, Courtney O'Keefe and Brittany Tschida notched kills to cut it to 20-15 before three straight Trojan points pushed the set to the brink.
The Hawks would rally to cut the deficit to 24-21 as the Trojans' offense made a few mistakes. UMO would take the set 25-21.
2nd Set: Chowan 25, Mount Olive 19
Chowan raced out to an early 5-1 lead thanks to three UMO errors. Courtney O'Keefe and Kayla Gates tallied kills during the spurt.
The Trojan miscues continued following a timeout as the Hawks were staked to a 14-4 advantage.
UMO would right the ship for a moment climbing back into the set at 14-8 before Brittany Tschida closed the door with a kill.
With Mount Olive looking to climb back in the set closing the gap to 19-15 Milica Vejnovic pushed the Hawks forward with the kill.
Brittany Tschida finished off the set with three kills to knot the match at one set each.
3rd Set: Chowan 22, Mount Olive 25
The third set featured a back-and-forth approach to the opening points as UMO led 9-4 early. Kills by Brittany Tschida and Milica Vejnovic pulled the Hawks to within one, 9-8.
Mount Olive stunned the Hawks with four straight points to force a CU timeout trailing 13-8.
Chowan fought back in the set with two kills by Makayla Castro and a service ace by Karisa Patterson to cut the UMO lead to 15-13.
The Trojans countered with a 20-15 lead to force the final Chowan timeout.
Momentum shifted for the moment for the Hawks as Courtney O'Keefe, Milica Vejnovic, Kayla Gates, and Brittany Tschida brought the Hawks to within one, 21-20.
Brittany Tschida registered a kill in the final point for the Hawks in the set as the Trojans escaped with a 25-22 set and a 2-1 set advantage.
4th Set: Chowan 25, Mount Olive 23
Chowan was the beneficiary of four Trojan errors to lead the set 6-4 early. The Hawks and Trojans battled and swapped points throughout the set as the set saw 14 ties in the set.
Chowan trailed 23-22 late in the set before a Trojan attack error knotted the match at 23-all. Brittany Tschida's kill and a Trojan error gave the Hawks the set and forced a decisive fifth set.
5th Set: Chowan 15, Mount Olive 9
After surrendering the opening point on a service error, Chowan fought back with a Courtney O'Keefe kill followed by a service ace by Makayla Castro to give the Hawks the 2-1 lead.
Mount Olive would take their last lead of the set at 4-3 before Milica Vejnovic took the lead back for the Hawks with a kill.
Kills by Karisa Patterson, Kayla Gates and Milica Vejnovic paced the Hawks to an 8-5 lead at the change of side.
The Hawks continued the momentum as Milica Vejnovic served up two aces. As the Trojans were mounting a comeback, Karisa Patterson rejected the attempt with two blocks sending the set to match point, 14-9.
The Trojans final attempt would not make it over the net as the Hawks took the set and match.
UP NEXT
Chowan returns to the court on Wednesday, October 11, as the Hawks travel to Barton in a non-conference match. Barton defeated Chowan 3-0 in the opening match at home for the Hawks.
