CU Baseball: Cooper Lifts the Hawks Over the Bulldogs
WILSON, NC – Chowan's Zack Cooper had a banner day in a 7-6 nonconference win over Barton College on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks improved to 20-19 on the year after Tuesday's win. Cooper pitched his 4th win of the season after coming on in the 5th inning and guiding the Hawks to the one-run victory. Cooper's bat rallied the Hawks in the top of the 9th after he blasted a two run homerun to help spark the come from behind victory.
The Hawks posted a run in the first inning after Cooper drove in Marvin Harrell Jr. with a double to left field. The Bulldogs answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-1 lead. Tyler Jones notched an RBI single in the top of the 4th frame to cut the Bulldog lead to 4-2. Harry Markotay blasted a solo homerun in the top fo the 6th inning to pull Chowan within one run at 4-3 but Barton answered back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Trailing 6-3 in the Hawks final at-bat, Marquise Lanier led the inning off with a double. Harrell collected a bunt single, moving Lanier to third base. Harrell stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Barton, which scored Lanier to cut into the Barton lead at 6-4. With a Harrell at third base, Cooper drove the ball over the left field wall to knot the game at 6-6. After a Bulldogs pitching change, Trent Brosdahl kept the inning going with a single. Markotay followed that up with a double and advanced Brosdahl to third base. Julian Lopez loaded the bases after drawing a walk which brought up Jones. Jones put the ball in play and picked up an RBI after scoring Brosdahl on a fielders choice. Brosdahl crossed the plate to give the Hawks a 7-6 lead.
With a one run cushion Cooper went to the mound and retired the side for his fourth win of the year. Cooper pitched 3.2 innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three Bulldog batters. Will Edwards got the nod on the mound. He threw 5.1 innings. He gave up five runs on six hits before being replaced by Cooper.
The Hawks collected 12 hits in the game. Markotay ended the game 3-5 with two runs and an RBI while Cooper was 2-5 with three runs batted in. Harrell ended the game 2-5 with two runs scored.
Chowan improved their overall record to 20-19 after the win. The Hawks will take off until April 18thwhen they travel to the University of Mount Olive for a two-game series over the 18th and 19th.
