Chowan Softball Continues CIAA Northern Division Streak With Wins Over Virginia Union
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RICHMOND, VA – The Chowan University softball team ran their CIAA Northern Division record to 6-0 after downing Virginia Union University 3-0 and 8-2 on the road Sunday afternoon. The Hawks improved their overall record to 28-16 and their league record to 11-1.
Chowan won game one 3-0 behind the bats of Kris Neal and Danielle Baccus. Kayla Robins pitched a one-hitter and struck out 16 Lady Panthers. Kris Neal got the Hawks on the board in the top of the 2nd inning with a solo shot to left field. With a 1-0 lead and Robins mowing down the Panthers batting line up, Baccus singled up the middle to score Katrina Simmons from third base in the top of the 3rd inning. Neal drove in Haley Cooper in the same inning on a sacrifice fly to spread their lead to 3-0. That would be enough for the Hawks to pick up the 3-0 shut out win.
The Hawks picked up an 8-2 second game win. After three scoreless innings, Tina White put her squad on the board with an RBI single, scoring Cooper from second base. Simmons and Cooper helped the Hawks spread the lead to 3-0 with a pair of RBI singles in the top of the 5th inning. White led the 6th inning off with a solo homerun and a 5-1 lead. White's homerun sparked the teams offense as they added three more runs that same inning to take an 8-1 lead. The Panthers added another score in the bottom of the 7th but their come back was cut short by Robins, who entered the game with one out in the bottom of the 7th to strikeout the last two batters.
Shelby Griffis pitched the second game win. She tossed 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits and and two runs. She struck out six batters in route to her 3rd win of the year. Cooper, White, Brook Bowen each collected two hits in the win.
The Hawks will travel to UNC-Pembroke on Wednesday, April 12th in their next outing for a non-conference doubleheader.
