Hawks Take 2nd Place at the SAU Golf Round Up
CLAYTON, NC – The Chowan University men's golf team concluded play at the Saint Augustine's Golf Round Up on Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks posted a team score of 312, shaving off 16 strokes from their final team score at the Saint Augustine's Invitational on Monday afternoon. Chowan finished in second place and just four strokes off the wining team score posted by Virginia Union (308).
Chowan's team score of 312 ties the lowest round of the year for the Hawks. They carded a 312 in a dual match win over Waynesburg College on March 2nd and in the fall season at the Don Scalf Invitational hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan.
CU's Christian Fleetwood earned the Individual Medalist with a one-hole playoff, after being tied at 151 with Virginia Union's Paul Meints for the lowest combined score of Monday and Tuesday (combined scores were for awards purposes only). Fleetwood shot a low-round of 72 on Monday and turned in a 79 today to force the playoff.
In today's match, Jordan Francis led the effort for the Hawks after shooting a 76 and finishing in a tie for 3rd place in the 39 player field. Billy Britton tied for eighth place and scored a 78 while, Dale Davis and Steven Rhinard each carded a 79 in the one-round tournament, good enough for a tie for 10th place. Rich Edwards finished the match tied in 14th after carding an 80.
Darren Peoples and Tyler Pittman each competed as individuals and shot a 87 and 93 respectively.
Chowan will return to the course on March 16th through March 18th as they travel to Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Hawks will compete in the Brown Golf Intercollegiate.
