Chowan University to Host the Qualifying Round of North Carolina State Math Competition
MURFREESBORO, NC – On March 24, 2017, more than 430 school children will fill the halls as the Chowan University Department of Mathematics hosts the qualifying round of the North Carolina State Math Competition for the 31st time. Dr. Thomas Whitaker, Chair, Associate Professor of Mathematics, and Director of the Honors College, has been the coordinator for the Chowan contest since 2003 and will lead the effort again this year.
The competition is primarily for middle and high school students, although a few elementary schools participate as well. Typically, between 300 and 350 students register each year. Schools from as far away as Durham, Rocky Mount, and the Outer Banks regularly attend. The competition is offered in four divisions, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Comprehensive.
Each student will take a 30-question multiple-choice exam. The winners are determined by the number of correct responses. First, second and third place awards are conferred in each division, for both individual and team categories.
Although the deadline to register for this year’s contest was March 10, if you are interested in participating next year please contact Dr. Whitaker at whitat@chowan.edu or (252) 398-6344.
