Chowan Baseball Wins Marathon Game with Barton
MURFREESBORO, NC – The Chowan University baseball team picked up an 8-7 extra innings win over Barton College on Tuesday afternoon. Chowan improves to 4-6 overall. Tuesday's loss is the first for Barton this season, they walk away at 13-1.
Will Edwards got the nod on the mound. He threw six innings in the game, giving up four earned runs and striking out three Barton batters. Daniel Whitener pitched two shut out innings, setting up Zack Cooper for the eventual win.
Chowan got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Zack Cooper led the inning off with a double to right field. He advanced to third on a single back up the middle by Trent Brosdahl. Cooper and Brosdahl advanced a base scored after Barton's Troy Maslowski was called for a balk, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead and placing Brosdahl on second. With one out, Aaron Flanagan singled to right field. A fielding error by Barton allowed Brosdahl to score from second and Flanagan to advance to third, giving the Hawks a 2-0 lead through two innings.
Cooper accounted for another run in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI double to left field. His double scored Julian Lopez from first who reached base on an infield fielding error.
Barton got on the board in the top of the 4th inning after Andrew Webster scored on an infield error. The Bulldogs plated another run to cut the Chowan lead to 3-2 in the top of the 5th inning when Blake Spangenberg scored on a single to right field by Tyler Garrett. Spangenberg reached base with a one-out triple to right field. Edwards pitched out of the inning with Bulldog runners at first and second.
Barton took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 7th inning when Hunter Pearre singled to left center, scoring two runs. Andrew Webster drove in a run on an infield out to get up on the Hawks 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th inning.
Brosdahl drilled a two run homerun to left center field to swipe the lead back from Barton in the bottom of the 8th inning. Barton battled back in the top of the 9th inning to take a 7-6 lead. BC's Chris Davis drove in a Bulldog run on a sacrifice fly to give Barton a 7-6 lead. In the bottom of the 9th inning, Julian Lopez singled up the middle to score Marvin Harrell to knot the game at 7-7.
The game remained tied up until the bottom of the 11th inning. Connor Arcobasso singled to left center with one out and stole second. Lanier followed that up with a single to left field. An advancing Arcobasso was thrown out at home by Barton but the call was overruled by the field umpire with an obstruction call on Barton's third baseman. The obstruction called credited the Hawks with Arcobasso's run to take the eventual 8-7 extra innings win.
Zack Cooper was credited with the win after coming in to throw three innings. He struck out five Bulldog batters in the win. Landry Moore was credited with the loss for Barton after coming in for relief in the 8th inning.
Arcobasso, Cooper, Brosdahal, and Aaron Flanagan each collected two hits in the win.
The Hawks will hit the diamond again on Saturday and Sunday, February 25th-26th when they play host to Lock Haven University in a four-game series.
