Feb 6, 2017 by Staff Reports

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HICKORY, NC – The Chowan University softball team split a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon with the #25 ranked team in NCAA D2 rankings, Lenoir-Rhyne University. The Hawks beat the Bears 5-2 in extra innings in the first game and were edged out in the night cap 6-5.

Brooke Bowen's three RBI double in the top of the 8th inning helped propel the team to the extra innings 5-2 first game win. The game was tight up until that run scoring double. Kris Neal got the Hawks on the board first with a solo homerun in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the 7th inning, the Hawks forced extra innings after Danielle Baccus stroked a double. Donya Salman came in to pinch run for Baccus. Salman advanced to third on a ground ball out by Brittany Parson. Bowen singled in the ensuing at-bat to score Salman to knot the game at 2-2.

Kayla Robins held the Bears off the board in the bottom of the 7th inning, setting up Bowen's bases loaded double and go ahead runs. With a 5-2 lead, Robins popped two batters out and struck out the last Bear batter to solidify the Hawks first win of the season.

Robins tossed 8.0 innings, scattered five hits, and struck out 14 Bear Batters.

The night cap was another thriller of a game but it was the Bears who would get the 6-5 win in their last at-bat. Shannon Buchanan pitched the first four innings, giving up four runs on nine hits. Robbins came in to throw the last three innings.

Katrina Simmons ended the second game 2-4 ith three RBI while Bowen was 1-3 with an RBI and Molly Rosenthal was 1-2.
