Chowan Baseball Take Two from Coker on Sunday
MURFREESBORO, NC-The Chowan University baseball team concluded their season-opening four-game series against Coker College on Sunday afternoon, splitting the series at 2-2. After dropping both games of the doubleheader on Saturday, the Hawks bounced back and earned a 7-4 victory in the first game and an 8-5 night cap win.
Chowan improves to 2-2 on the season while Coker posts a 3-1 mark on the year after Sunday's games.
In the opening game the Cobras tallied eight hits led by Bryson Conner. The Hawks recorded nine hits to earn the victory. Chowan used a balance of solid pitching and offense to help propel them to Sunday's wins.
Senior hurler Jake Moore pitched the win for CU in the opening game. He threw 4.0 innings, giving up six hits and three runs in the game. Vinny Puma pitched the fifth inning, setting up Zack Cooper to close the game out. Puma struck out two batters in an inning of work. Cooper tossed 2.0 innings, scattering two hits and a run, and striking out four Cobra batters.
Chowan exploded in their first at-bat, scoring three runs off of three hits. They added posted another four in the bottom of the 4th inning, capped off by a two RBI double by Julian Lopez.
Trent Brosdahl went 2-4 with an RBI while Cooper and Lopez accounted for two RBI each. Connor Arcobasso was 2-2 with two runs scored. Harry Markotay went 2-3 with an RBI and Marquis Lanier tallied one hit in three plate appearances.
For Coker, Jon Kioski picked up the loss on the mound after 3.0 innings of work. AJ Strnad picked up two hits in four plate appearances.
Chowan's offense continued through the second game after pounding out 15 team hits. Tre Harper got the start for CU. After a four-run first inning for Coker, Harper settled in to pick up the win. He gave up five runs in struck out four batters in 3.2 innings of work. Emory Chopp pitched in relief of Harper for the save. Chopp struck out seven of 12 batters faced.
The Hawks exploded for five runs in their first at-bat after tallying eight hits. After a two RBI double by Brosdahl, Robert Williams hammered a homerun to deep right field to put his squad back on top.
The plated single runs in the second, fifth, and sixth innings to ice the game for their second win of the young season.
Six CU batters garnered multiple hit games, led by Lanier who went 3-3 with a run scored. Brosdahl ended the game 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Martkotay, Arcobasso, Cooper, and Aaron Flanagan each tallied two hits.
The Hawks return to action as they travel to Florence, South Carolina to take on Francis Marion University February 14th-15th, 2017.
