CU Women’s Basketball Picks up Road Win Over Virginia State
PETERSBURG, VA – The Chowan University women's basketball team rolled to a 64-55 win over CIAA Northern Division opponent, Virginia State University, on Wednesday night. Senior forward Jordan Payne dropped 19 points in the game to help propel the Hawks to their 12th win of the season.
Chowan took a narrow 18-16 lead into the the second quarter and hit a dry spell midway through the second quarter but squeaked out a 30-26 halftime lead. Out of the break, CU's Mariah Coker drained a three-pointer to end the drought that started at the 5:00 mark of the second quarter. Coker's three-pointer set the tone for the 3rd quarter as Chowan went hot. They went on to a 19-0 run to open the 3rd quarter and would eventually outscore the Lady Trojans 24-9 in that quarter.
Virginia State bounced back in the final quarter of play, cutting the CU lead to eight at various points but the damage was done and the Hawks left Petersburg with the 64-55 win and their 12th season victory.
Payne led the team with 19 points. She also hauled in nine boards. Coker chipped in 11 points, three assists, and three steals. Dhyamond Crenshaw finished up with 10 points and boards. Sophomore guard Jada Lee chipped in nine points off the bench.
For Virginia State, Nandi Taylor led all scorers with 24 points. The Lady Trojans fall to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in league play after Wednesday's game.
The Hawks are 2-0 in CIAA Northern Division play and look to host Bowie State on Saturday, Jan. 21st at 2:00pm at the Helms Center.
