Hawks Sink Lady Broncos

Dec 15, 2016 by Staff Reports

Box Score MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University women's basketball team picked up a 70-61 win over Fayetteville State University on Tuesday evening in the Helms Center. The Hawks improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in CIAA action with the victory.  The Lady Broncos slip to a 1-6 overall and 0-1 against league competition after the setback.

Jordan Payne led the Hawks with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win. Danielle Weldon added 15 points and five rebounds, while Shaikeyla Jordan chipped in 13 points over the course of night.

Yakima Clifton led the effort for Fayetteville State with 13 points and eight rebounds, followed by Chinwendu Maduegbunam with 12 points and eight boards.

Maduegbunam opened the contest with a jumper for the Broncos.   After exchanging baskets early in the contest, the Hawks worked their way to a 9-6 lead in the first quarter after a free throw by Weldon at the 4:35 mark.  Chowan battled to overcome three ties in the first quarter before taking a narrow 17-16 lead over Fayetteville State after the first ten minutes of play.

The teams battled back and forth throughout the second quarter before Jordan's bucket with 1:28 on the clock gave the Hawks a 34-27 lead.  The Lady Broncos answered with a layup, but trailed 34-29 heading into the halftime break.

Chowan built on the momentum at the start of the third quarter and used Payne's layup with 8:32 on the clock to pull away 40-29.  The Hawks maintained control through the remainder of the third quarter and carried a commanding 57-42 lead into the last ten minutes of play.

The Lady Broncos were unable to recover from the deficit in the fourth quarter, allowing Chowan to easily secure the 70-61 victory.

The Hawks return to action on December 17th when Chowan takes on Saint Augustine's University. Tip-off is slated for 2pm in the Helms Center.
