Hawks Dismantle Broncos in CIAA Opener
Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team downed Fayetteville State University 62-49 on Tuesday evening. The Hawks improve to 5-2 overall and start CIAA play with a 1-0 record with the victory while the Broncos slide to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in the league. Tuesday's contest marked the first CIAA contest of the season for both teams.
Jeremy Smith led all players in the contest with 15 points in the victory. Marco Haskins and Joe Goodwin both added 11 points for the Chowan Blue and White with Goodwin notching a game-high 14 rebounds (three offensive, 11 defensive). Tim Hewett added nine points in the win.
Josh Bryant paced Fayetteville State with 14 points and eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive) in the loss. Willie Gilmore notched seven points for the Broncos.
Fayetteville State raced to a 6-0 lead at the start of the first half before Kevin Kuteyi's jumper, two free throws by Smith and a bucket by Carlos Arroyo knotted the score 6-6 with10:52 on the clock. After a two minute scoring drought by both teams, a dunk by Gilmore pushed the Broncos ahead 8-6 by the 8:41 mark.
Chowan and Fayetteville State exchanged baskets down the final stretch of the first half. With Chowan trailing 19-18 and 3:37 on the clock, Goodwin completed a three-point play to push the Hawks ahead 21-19. Chowan held onto the advantage and headed into halftime with a narrow 23-20 lead.
The Hawks battled at the start of the second half to pull away 34-24 with 16:11 left to play. Chowan continued to build on the momentum and used Goodwin's free throw with 5:49remaining in the game to take a commanding 52-34 advantage. The Broncos were unable to overcome the deficit, allowing the Hawks to easily secure the 62-49 victory.
Chowan returns to action on Thursday when the Hawks play host to Shaw University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
