Chase, Zavala Garner NCCSIA All-State Recognition
GREENSBORO, NC- The North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced the 2016 College Division All-State Volleyball Team on Tuesday. Eleven different North Carolina institutions and 14 student-athletes were recognized on this year's team. Chowan University's Suraya Chase and Bailey Zavala garnered NCCSIA Second Team recognition.
Barton College, Chowan, and Meredith College led the way with a pair of selections each, while Fayetteville State University, Johnson and Wales-Charlotte, Montreat College, Lenoir-Rhyne University, Queens University of Charlotte, Saint Augustine's University, UNC Pembroke, and Wingate University all placed a student-athlete on one of the two All-State Teams.
Chase, the 2016 CIAA Player of the Year, led the Hawks with 385 kills over the course of her senior campaign. The Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago native recorded 281 digs, 42 service aces, and 40 blocks (nine solo, 31 assisted) while guiding Chowan to the CIAA Northern Division title.
Zavala, hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, hauled in 632 digs for the Chowan Blue and White. She earned All-CIAA First Team recognition this season.
Nominees were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by the NCCSIA members.
Founded in 2002, the NCCSIA is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of North Carolina. The purpose of the organization is to promote collegiate athletics at all schools. Membership is open to anyone affiliated with a college, university, or conference located in North Carolina, and whose area of responsibility lies within sports information.
NCCSIA selects All-State Teams in the University (Division I) and College (Division II, III, NAIA) divisions for men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, softball, and baseball.
