CU Swimming Strokes Past UNC-Pembroke
MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University women's swim team won 14 events in a home dual meet against UNC-Pembroke on Friday afternoon. Friday's meet is the second first place finish for the Hawks women's swim team this season. The Hawks stroked out a 109-67 victory over the visiting Braves.
The Hawks opened the meet with top finish in 400 meter medley relay after finishing with a finals time of 4:52.26 and went to win the remaining thirteen events. Julia Chimielewska, Sarah Hull, Kietra Lloyd, and SheAyre Bowles combined efforts in the 400 medley to help set the tone for the meet.
Kjhana O posted a time of 10:01.03 in the 800 meter freestyle to beat UNC-Pembroke's Gina Zhang. Zhang posted a finishing time of 10:33.67 for the Braves.
Kenya McCray beat Kelsey Williams in the 200 meter freestyle after posting a time of 2:13.89. She beat Williams by more than 23 seconds in the event after Williams finished with a time of 2:36.18.
Chmielewska dominated the 50 meter backstroke, winning the heat with a final time of 31:03. UNC-Pembroke's Amanda Snider finished the heat at 46.85 and teammate Alexys Pagan finished just behind her with a time of 46.87.
O swept the competition in the 5th event of the meet, the 50 meter breaststroke. O finished up with a time of 37.78. Her time was good enough to beat teammate Hull who finished just behind O at 40.40. UNC-Pembroke's Sonyaliz Goveo finished in third place in the heat with a time of 44:18.
McCray bested Zhang in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:08.51. Zhang completed the heat with a time of 1:12.95.
Bowles sprinted past the field in the 7th heat of the day, the 50 meter freestyle. Bowles completed the heat with a time of 28.30, winning the heat by more than three seconds. Williams finished up 31.98 while Taylor Lusk finished the race for UNCP-Pembroke with a time of 35.97. Pagan wrapped up the heat with a 41.83.
In the 100 meter freestyle McCray took the top finish after posting a time of 1:01.39. She beat UNC-Pembroke's Williams (1:12.24), Lusk (1:21.20), and Amanda Snider (1:28.99).
CU's Lloyd won the 100 meter backstroke unopposed with a time of 1:13.45.
Chmielewska took first place in the 100 meter breaststroke with a time of 1:21.88. CU's Hull finished just behind her at 1:31.94. UNC-Pembroke's Goveo took the third spot with a time of 1:40.27.
Chowan's O bested UNC-Pembroke's Zhang in the 400 meter freestyle with a finishing time of 4:56.00. Zhang touched the wall with a time of 5:08.41 to finish second.
Chowan took first place finishes in the 12th, 13th, and 14th events through exhibition times but surrendered the points to UNC-Pembroke to close out the meet with a final score of 109-67.
