Hawks Survive Late Rally, Top Golden Eagles 84-78
Box Score INSTITUTE, WV- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned their second win in as many days on Sunday afternoon with an 84-78 win over the University of Charleston (WV). The Hawks improve to 2-0 with the win while the Golden Eagles slide to 0-2 with the setback.
Four Hawks recorded double-digit points on Sunday. Chantel Roberts paced the Hawks with 16 points while Courtni Williams added 12 points in the win. Shaikeyla Jordanchipped in 11 points for the Chowan Blue and White while Jordan Payne notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 rebounds (four offensive, nine defensive).
Jordyn Peck led all players in the contest with 28 points for the Golden Eagles. Mya Walker added 18 points and 13 rebounds (five offensive, eight defensive) with Olivia Nicholas notching 12 points in the setback.
Danielle Weldon opened the contest with a bucket to give the Hawks an early edge. The Hawks and Golden Eagles exchanged baskets through the majority of the first quarter before a three-pointer by Octavia Loll left Chowan trailing 11-5 at the 2:24 mark. The Hawks fought back to pull within two points (13-11) with 1:13 on the clock but the Golden Eagles tacked on a layup and took advantage of three free throws to pull away 18-11 with four seconds left to play. Mariah Coker drained a three-pointer with one second left in the first quarter to put the Hawks back within striking distance.
Two three-pointers by Roberts along with a layup by Jada Lee contributed to an 8-4 run for the Hawks at the start of the second quarter and knotted the score 22-22. With the score tied 35-35 at the 2:29 mark, the Hawks held the Golden Eagles to two points while taking advantage of a three-pointer by Jordan Pettaway and basket by Dhyamond Crenshaw to take a narrow 40-37 lead into the halftime break.
Both teams fought to take control of the momentum at the start of the third quarter. Payne's layup with 7:27on the clock gave the Hawks some breathing room and left the Golden Eagles trailing 46-39. Chowan built their lead to as many as 11 points (59-48) after Coker's three-pointer at the 3:38 mark before closing out the third quarter with a commanding 65-52 advantage.
Chowan dominated the majority of the fourth quarter, holding a lead of 10 or more points until the last two minutes of play. With a 79-69 lead at the 1:29 mark, a layup by Peck for Charleston (WV) left Chowan clinging to a 79-71 lead. The Hawks pulled away 82-71 with just under one minute on the clock, but the Golden Eagles orchestrated a quick 7-0 run to make the score 82-78 with eight seconds left in the game. Payne sunk two free throws after a Charleston (WV) foul to secure the 84-78 win for the Chowan Blue and White.
The Hawks return to action on November 16th when Chowan travels to take on Francis Marion University. Tip-off is slated for 6pm.
