Chowan University Joins the Global #GivingTuesday Movement
MURFREESBORO, NC – Chowan University has joined #GivingTuesday, a global day ofgiving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. This year Chowan University is partnering with ACE Homecenter of Ahoskie and Murfreesboro to bring #GivingTuesday to Hertford County. Both ACE stores have pledged to match and donate a percentage of their sales on #GivingTuesday. When you shop at ACE of Ahoskie and Murfreesboro on November 29th, you are supporting two great causes: local business and accessible higher education.
Chowan University students are busy doing good in the world. They volunteer their time and boundless energy in many ways, including mission trips, hurricane disaster relief, mentoring in local schools, raising money for charities, and boosting awareness of various needs and causes. Those clubs and organizations are getting involved with #GivingTuesday by creating videos that showcase how they give back to the university and to the community at large. Alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters are encouraged to join in by posting an #UNselfie (unselfish selfie), a photo of yourself giving back, or a short video about why you give.
All undesignated gifts made on #GivingTuesday will benefit Chowan University’s Annual Fund, which is the administrative umbrella for all the annual giving programs on the campus. Annual gifts go to work right away (unlike endowed gifts, which are invested for the long term), so each gift has immediate impact.
Held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.), #GivingTuesday kicks-off the holiday giving season and inspires people to collaborate in improving their local communities. Along with the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday,#GivingTuesday is placed at the start of the charitable season when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. People are encouraged to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support.
Last year, more than 45,000 organizations in 71 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. Since its founding in 2012, #GivingTuesday has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations, volunteer hours, and activities that bring about real change in communities.
