Hawks Outlast Rams 5-4
Box Score COLUMBIA, SC- The Chowan University men's soccer team survived a late rally by Columbia International University to capture a 5-4 win on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 8-6-2 on the year with the win while the Rams drop to 5-12 on the season with the setback.
In the 18th minute, Lee Wattam put the Hawks on the board with an unassisted goal. Doran Battermann knotted the score five minutes later after chipping the ball past Chowan's keeper. Graham Jermstad and Luke Brooks were both credited with the assist on the play. With the score tied 1-1, Danny Gallegos found the back of the net with an unassisted goal in the 40th minute.
After taking a 2-1 lead into the halftime break, Wattam capitalized on a penalty kick to extend the Hawks' advantage ahead in the 67th minute. The Rams cut the deficit in the 75th minute of play after Jermstad found the back of the net on a successful penalty kick.
Holding a 3-2 lead, Paul Migliarina rocketed a shot into the top corner of the net using a cross from Ben Chapman. Down but not out, Columbia International rallied to score two goals within the next six minute, knotting the score 4-4. With less than four minutes remaining in regulation, Chapman propelled the Hawks to victory with an unassisted goal.
Chowan notched 13 shots in the contest led by Wattam with three shots. Josh Baker and Migliarina each added two shots in the victory. Carlos Ramirez notched two saves in-goal for the Chowan Blue and White.
Columbia International tallied 11 shots in the setback. Jermsted paced the Rams with three shots. Luke Brooks and Jacob Rechenbach combined for three saves in-goal.
Chowan will conclude the 2016 season with a make-up game against Lees-McRae. Details will be released as they become available.
