Hawks Down Lady Lions
Box Score LINCOLN, PA- The Chowan University volleyball team earned their third straight win on Monday evening after defeating Lincoln University (PA) 3-0. The Hawks improve to 8-6 on the year and post a 5-1 mark in CIAA play with the win. Chowan maintains a perfect CIAA Northern Division record with a 3-0 mark after Monday's contest. Lincoln (PA) falls to 3-10 on the year and 2-3 in league play with the setback.
The Hawks earned a 25-8 win over the Lady Lions in the opening set and defeated Lincoln (PA) 25-19 in sets two and three.
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 12 kills in the victory. Morgan Spencer notched six kills for the Chowan Blue and White while Sydney Miller added five kills for the Hawks. Karisa Patterson dished out 30 assists while Bailey Zavala and Makayla Castro accounted for 20 digs and 10 digs, respectively.
Atarah Lindsey paced the Lady Lions with six kills and 13 digs in the win. Shanna King notched 11 assists while Tierra Russaw hauled in 16 digs.
Chowan held the Lady Lions to a mere eight points in the first set, grabbing control of the momentum early in the contest. After surrendering the first point in set one, the Hawks raced to a 6-1 lead and never looked back. Holding a 10-4 edge, Chowan pieced together three series of runs to easily earn the 25-8 win.
The Hawks continued to build on the momentum in set two as Chowan rolled to a quick 5-0 lead. Down but not out, Lincoln (PA) fought back to take knot the score 15-15 midway through the set. The Hawks responded with a 5-1 run to gain a 20-16 edge. Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest and secured the 25-19 win after taking advantage of a Lady Lion attack error.
Chowan and Lincoln (PA) exchanged points early in set three. The Hawks held a narrow 13-9 edge before a kill by Chase sparked an 8-2 run; leaving the Lady Lions trailing 21-11. Despite a late rally by Lincoln (PA) down the final stretch of set three, a Lady Lion attack error solidified the 25-19 win for Chowan.
The Hawks return to action on October 1st-2nd as Chowan travels to compete in the CIAA Round-Up. Chowan will take on Livingstone College on Saturday at 12pm and Johnson C. Smith at 6pm followed by a11am contest against Winston-Salem State University on Sunday. All matches will take place on the campus of Winston-Salem State University.
