Hawks Open CIAA Northern Division Play with Win over Elizabeth City State
Box Score MURFREESBORO –The Chowan University volleyball team downed Elizabeth City State University in straight sets on Thursday evening. The Hawks improve to 6-6 on the year and hold a 3-1 record in CIAA play with the win. The Lady Vikings fall to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in league play with the setback. Thursday's match marked the first CIAA Northern Division match-up of the season for both teams.
The Hawks opened the match with a 25-16 set one win. In set two, Chowan handled the Lady Vikings 25-14 before securing the match win with a 25-13 victory in set three.
Suraya Chase led all players in the contest with 12 kills in the victory. Caitlin Turner followed with seven kills while Karisa Patterson and Turner handed out 21 and 12 assists, respectively. Bailey Zavala tallied a team-high 12 digs in the win.
Auzheure Jackson recorded four kills for Elizabeth City State. Lindsay Julien tallied eight assists while Nikhaule Singleton notched 11 digs.
The Hawks raced to an 8-2 advantage in the first set, taking control of the momentum right from the start. Chowan pulled away by as many as nine points (19-10) before securing the 25-16 win with a kill by Chase.
The Lady Vikings regained their composure at the start of set two, taking advantage of Chowan attack errors to take a 7-4 lead. The Hawks rallied back for a 6-0 run behind a kill by Chase to take a narrow 10-7 lead. Chowan clung to an 11-10 advantage before a kill by Courtney O'Keefe led to a 5-0 run for the Hawks, leaving the Lady Vikings trailing 16-10. The Hawks maintained control for the remainder of the set and secured the 25-14 victory behind a kill by O'Keefe.
Chowan rolled to a 10-2 lead advantage at the start of set three. Holding a 17-11 lead, the Hawks built on the momentum with a 6-0 run after taking advantage of four Elizabeth City State errors and two kills by Chase. Chowan secured the 25-14 victory using a kill by O'Keefe.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday as Chowan travels to take on Bowie State University. First serve is slated for 1:00pm.
