Chowan to Host Wind Quintet

Sep 21, 2015 by Staff Reports

Join Chowan University on Sunday, September 27th at 3:30 pm in Briley Recital Hall as we host the Hampton Roads Wind Quintet. Briley Recital Hall is Chowan’s recently renovated performance space located on the first floor of the Music Department’s Daniel Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.

The Hampton Roads Woodwind Quintet consists of a consortium of musicians from the Hampton Roads area that first came together to perform at the Experiencing Villa-Lobos International Festival held February 2008 at Virginia Commonwealth University. The ensemble has performed recitals at Hampton University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Norfolk State University, and Chowan University. In addition, the group was appeared on the Music In the Woods concert series sponsored by the Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in Newport News, VA.

The September 27th performance at Chowan University will feature Wayne Hedrick on flute, Harvey Stokes on oboe, Marvin Western on clarinet, Rena Long on English horn, and Stephanie Sanders on bassoon. Collaborative artist Paula Pressnell will accompany the quintet on piano for a Beethoven piece.

Other works to be performed include both a wind quintet and a suite in F by Gustav Holst and “Three Shanties for Wind Quintet” by Malcolm Arnold.
